Nato
a Blackpool, Inghilterra, il 2 febbraio 1942, Graham Nash ha
cominciato a suonare con l'amico d'infanzia Allan Clarke all'età di
quattordici anni. Al 1962 il loro primo "ingaggio" in vari
gruppi di skiffle (Two Teens, Ricky & Dane, Four Tones), per poi
unirsi ai Flintstones di Eric Haydock (bassista) e trasformarli, nel
1963 con l'arrivo di Don Rathbone (batterista), nel primo nucleo
degli Hollies. Più tardi, con l'aggiunta di Tony Hicks (chitarra,
voce) e di Bobby Elliott (entrambi dai Dolphins, e Bobby a sostituire
Don), gli Hollies diventano una realtà e raggiungono il successo
internazionale come parte della British Invasion e del movimento
beat. Fanno un'apparizione anche in Italia al festival di Sanremo del
1967 (Non prego per me). Durante un tour negli Stati Uniti all'inizio
di 1967, Nash ha la possibilità di cantare in modo informale con
David Crosby e Stephen Stills. L'esperienza è così importante che,
nello stesso anno, Nash lascia The Hollies, si trasferisce in America
e insieme a loro forma Crosby, Stills & Nash, attivi a tutt'oggi,
dopo 40 anni. A fianco dei tour e dei dischi di CSN(&Y), Nash ha
coltivato altri progetti musicali: la carriera solista e il duo con
Crosby. Inoltre in anni recenti ha curato diversi progetti d'archivio
del gruppo. Nash è anche un fotografo professionista con all'attivo
diverse mostre e un libro (Eye To Eye).
Come
cittadino del mondo che raggiunge la maturità nei rivoluzionari anni
'60 - ed autore, con CSN e CSNY, di buona parte della colonna sonora
di quella generazione - Nash è diventato un convinto attivista. Nash
ha suonato in più di 1000 concerti di beneficenza (inclusi quelli
per Greenpeace, Live Aid, Unicef, No Nukes, Peace Sunday e Vietnam
Veterans). Parteggia con il movimento anti-nucleare, la protezione
dell'ambiente e la difesa dei bambini in tutto il mondo. Molte delle
sue canzoni, dopo il primo periodo, sono incentrate su queste
tematiche.

Anche
il successivo disco CSN (1977) rappresenta un momento molto creativo
per Nash ("Just A Song Before I Go", "Cathedral"),
che prosegue poi con Earth & Sky (1980, "Barrel Of Pain"),
terzo album solista che però non raggiunge gli stessi apici.
Negli
anni 80 proseguono in modo altalenante le collaborazioni con CSN(&Y)
ed esce un ulteriore album solista, Innocent Eyes (1986). Ritrovata
durante gli anni 90 una certa freschezza compositiva, insieme ai
compagni di ventura Crosby e Stills ma anche a "nuove leve"
quali James Raymond e Jeff Pevar, il nuovo millennio è salutato da
due nuovi album, Songs For Survivors (2002, solista) e Crosby-Nash
(2004, in duo).
I tour di CSN riprendono con nuovo slancio e tornano in scena anche CSNY in diverse occasioni. Nel mentre, Nash prende in mano gli Archivi del trio producendo, nell'arco di una decina d'anni circa, un'antologia di successi e rarità per ciascuno dei tre musicisti, raccolte di demo d'inizio carriera (CSN, Stills) e infine il box set CSNY Live 1974. Quest'ultimo, uscito nell'estate 2014 in concomitanza col 40° anniversario del Doom Tour, ha impegnato Nash e Joel Bernstein per diversi anni tra selezione dei brani e missaggio in alta definizione. Un grande sforzo è ripagato: il triplo cd+dvd ha un'eccellente riscontro di pubblico e critica.
Nel 2013 esce l'autobiografia di Nash, Wild
Tales: A Rock 'n' Roll Life, tradotta anche in Italia: un viaggio in mezzo secolo di musica, amicizia e incredibili vicissitudini personali. Nel corso di alcuni concerti solisti e con CSN degli ultimi anni 2013, Nash debutta molte nuove canzoni da lui composte. Nel 2016 dà alle stampe This Path Tonight, disco di inediti composti insieme al chitarrista Shane Fontayne. I tour di CSN riprendono con nuovo slancio e tornano in scena anche CSNY in diverse occasioni.
